Why doodle coats mat so fast, and what helps

2026-10-20

Many doodle coats grow continuously, and loose hair gets caught in the curl instead of falling out. That's how mats form, usually first behind the ears, in the armpits, at the collar and on the legs.

Line brushing

Part the coat in sections and brush from the skin outward, then check with a metal comb. If the comb catches, that section isn't done yet. Surface brushing can make a coat look fluffy while mats keep building underneath.

Why this is a behavior issue too

A matted dog is uncomfortable to groom, and a long dematting session is hard on any dog. Short daily brushing plus the Brushing and Dryer tracks make each groom shorter and easier. See our Goldendoodle and Labradoodle pages.
