Grooming a reactive or fearful dog
Reactive dogs can find the sights, sounds and handling of a salon overwhelming. Home desensitization, the right groomer and your vet all play a part.
At home
- Keep every session below threshold: your dog should stay relaxed enough to take treats.
- Avoid tricks like peanut butter followed by a quick clip, and avoid forced restraint. VCA warns both can make fear worse.
- Practice the sounds (clipper, dryer) separately from touch.
At the groomer
- Ask for the first or last appointment of the day, or a mobile/one-on-one groomer, to avoid other dogs.
- Ask about skipping the cage dryer and taking breaks.
- Ask your vet about pre-visit anxiety medication if your dog panics. Only your vet can prescribe it.
