Grooming prep for a newly adopted rescue dog
You may not know a rescue dog's history with handling, clippers or baths. Assume nothing, start at step one of every track, and let your dog set the pace.
The first weeks
- Give your dog time to settle in before you start grooming practice.
- Learn their stress signals first: lip licking, yawning, whale eye, freezing, turning away.
- Pair your hand approaching with treats long before you try to hold a paw.
If a groom can't wait
- If matting or long nails can't wait, talk to your vet. A vet-supervised trim or a sedated groom may be kinder than a forced one.
- Look for groomers trained in low-stress handling, such as Fear Free certified groomers.
